Process Engineering of Biorefineries: Recent Results and New Research Vistas
نویسندگان
چکیده
Biomass conversion is a renewable alternative to produce fuels and chemicals. Development and optimization of biorefineries involves process engineering challenges at various scales, ranging from the chemistry of the conversion processes, to reactor and process design and optimization, and to enterpriselevel economic and supply chain analysis. In this article we discuss recent results in each of these levels, specifically, (a) complex thermochemical reaction network analysis using an in-house software, (b) process design and optimization for continuous production of chemicals (5-hydroxymethylfurfural) from biomass, and (c) supply chain optimization for biomass sourcing and facilities location in the midwestern US. Set in this context, we further discuss new research vistas at each level, and opportunities for advantages of integration of research tasks across multiple levels.

Design of integrated biorefineries
The design of biorefineries from pilots and installed facilities bears tremendous social and economic benefits. By 2020, Bloomberg predicts that, only in Europe, there would be around 1,000 of such new units bringing €32.3 trillion revenues and 1 million new jobs. Process systems engineering has a pivotal and critical role in the development of biorefineries. The general view is increasingly su...
متن کاملA New Optimized Hybrid Model Based On COCOMO to Increase the Accuracy of Software Cost Estimation
The literature review shows software development projects often neither meet time deadlines, nor run within the allocated budgets. One common reason can be the inaccurate cost estimation process, although several approaches have been proposed in this field. Recent research studies suggest that in order to increase the accuracy of this process, estimation models have to be revised. The Construct...

Application of thermoplastic materials has increased dramatically in recent decades due to its recyclability, low density, resistance to chemical changes. The friction stir welding process is one of the new methods of solid state welding, which has recently undergone a significant improvement. In this research, using a new tool Made of plain carbon steel st37 in friction stir welding and low co...
متن کاملOptimization of Synthesis of Expandable Polystyrene by Multi-Stage Initiator Dosing
Suspension polymerization process is commonly used to produce expandable polystyrene. In the conventional method for producing this polymer, two different initiators are added to the process at two different temperature levels. In the industrial scale, this process is time consuming and difficult to control. A new method (Multi-Stage Initiator Dosing, MID) is proposed, in which, the initiator i...
